There is no question that traveler’s checks are safe to travel with. They are insured against theft or loss and can normally be replaced within a few days.

HOWEVER, it is getting increasingly difficult to cash traveler’s checks abroad. It is practically impossible to cash euro checks in Spain and Italy, and very expensive to cash pounds checks in the UK.
If you carry traveler’s checks, please make sure to find a location that will cash them as soon as you arrive in a new city or you may find yourself in a pickle when you absolutely need the cash and can not find a place that will accept your checks.
If you carry American Express Traveler’s Checks, find their local office or representative and you may also want to ask if your hotel cashier will cash some checks if necessary.
In many instances, it may actually be better to carry US dollar denominated traveler’s checks which banks may be more inclined to purchase since there is an exchange involved and consequently a profit for them.

In closing, traveler’s checks have lost a lot of their luster, but it may still be a good idea to carry a few with you when traveling, just in case.
